Municipal sources report that the regional government has announced that a total of 301,403 people used the routes that make up the Greenways Network of the Region of Murcia during the first half of 2023, according to counters installed by the Regional Ministry of the Presidency, Tourism, Culture, Youth, Sports, and Spokesperson's Office on these infrastructures. This number of users represents a four percent increase compared to the 289,500 recorded during the same period of the previous year.
The most frequented greenway was the Northwest Greenway, with 171,551 users, followed by the Campo de Cartagena Greenway, with 61,003. The counters that recorded the highest number of users were those located in Molina de Segura and Cehegín.
Cyclists are the most frequent visitors to Cieza
72.5 percent of users were pedestrians and the remaining 27.5 percent were cyclists. The greenways with the highest percentage of people who chose to walk or run were those of Chicharra Yecla and Almendricos, with 89.6 percent and 84.8 percent, respectively; while those with the highest percentage of cyclists were those of Mazarrón, with 47.1 percent, followed by Chicharra Cieza, with 37 percent.
The acting Minister of the Presidency, Tourism, Culture, Youth, Sports and Spokesperson, Marcos Ortuño, indicated that the increase in activity on these "safe and accessible" paths corresponds to the commitment of the Strategic Tourism Plan 2022-2032 to offer more sustainable tourism away from overcrowding, which is developed primarily in natural spaces and "promotes healthy, active and sustainable experiences".
Currently, the Greenways Network of the Region of Murcia includes the Northwest, Campo de Cartagena, Mazarrón, El Hornillo Dock in Águilas, Almendricos, Chicharra Cieza, Chicharra Yecla, and Flowering routes, whose construction was completed in July. In total, they cover a length of more than 185 kilometers, which can be enjoyed on foot or by bicycle.
Counting the number of people on these routes is one of the indicators required in the FEDER operational program for monitoring the greenway improvement actions co-financed with these funds.
Investment in greenways in the Region within the FEDER program has reached 4.7 million euros since 2015.
