The mayor of Cieza, Tomás Rubio, accompanied by several councilors from his government team, attended the condolences this Monday morning for the death, allegedly at the hands of her ex-partner, of Hanane, a young North African woman who had lived in Cieza for 10 years. The educational community of the Cristo Crucificado School, where the murdered woman's six-year-old daughter attends, held this demonstration of condolences, led by its principal, Manuel Egea.
“A mayor would never want to find himself in a situation like this. A minute of silence in memory of the victim of this death, Hanane, and as a show of solidarity with this woman's family. Hanane's six-year-old daughter is a student at this school, and therefore, although similar events are being held this morning at all schools, we wanted to join in the expressions of condolences from this educational community.”
Restraining order in Cieza
Rubio confirmed that the Cieza City Council's Social Services were working on Hanane's case following reports of abuse filed against her ex-partner and the threats she had received. Similarly, following the tragedy of the young woman's death, the Social Policy Department has activated all established mechanisms to assist Hanane's daughter, who has been orphaned by her mother and is now being cared for by the Social Services team of psychologists. The City Council has also made this team of professionals available to the school where the little girl attends to help the school community cope with their grief.
The mayor emphasized that "municipal services were monitoring this woman's situation, but it is a complex and very difficult matter for security forces to conduct detailed monitoring of all victims of gender-based violence whose partners have a court-ordered restraining order."
Finally, the mayor expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of solidarity received from institutions and groups throughout the Region of Murcia.
Extraordinary Governing Board
Cieza City Council will hold a governing meeting this Monday afternoon to discuss the possibility of declaring official mourning for the death of this young woman.
Meanwhile, at 8:00 p.m., the public is invited to a ceremony of mourning, condemnation of the crime, and solidarity at the Esquina del Convento, where a minute of silence will be observed. The Regional Minister for Social Policy of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, Conchita Ruiz, has confirmed her attendance.
The Ministry of Equality confirmed this Monday the sexist nature of the murders of three women committed in Cieza (Murcia), Castelló de la Plana (Castellón), and Orihuela (Alicante). This brings the total number of women killed by their partners or ex-partners to seven this month; 47 in 2023; and 1,231 since 2003.
The deceased, a 34-year-old woman of North African origin, disappeared last Wednesday, and her own brother raised the alarm a day later. Since then, a search has been underway for the victim in an area of the Segura River as it flows through Cieza.
At the same time, her ex-partner, also of North African origin, was arrested for violating a restraining order after contacting and threatening her. Finally, after days of searching, the Civil Guard found the woman's body in a difficult-to-access area. He is being investigated for homicide and breach of a protective order.
