The new improvements to the regional network of Greenways in 2025 were addressed at the meeting held today by the Consortium's Governing Board. Of the actions, the Director General of the Tourism Institute, Juan Francisco Martínez, highlighted the "immediate approval of the expansion of the sensor system for the region's Greenways network, which has become the most comprehensive in the country," as well as improvements to the pavement of these routes.

These initiatives are in addition to those included in the "Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan," which focuses on improving, renovating, and preserving the regional network of greenways. The plan has a budget of €2.6 million, financed with European Next Generation funds.

Among them, some projects that will be implemented immediately include the construction of the Cehegín motorhome area; the implementation of a water channeling and collection system and its reuse as an irrigation network for plantations; the installation of lighting on the section of the greenway between Cehegín and Caravaca de la Cruz; and the modification of the greenway's route as it passes through Bullas.

Assessment of damage from the long rainy season in the Region of Murcia

During the meeting, it was also announced that an assessment of the damage caused by the recent storm is underway, and that an emergency intervention will be carried out. Finally, a summary of the actions implemented by the consortium in 2024 was presented.

Juan Francisco Martínez stated that these infrastructures, which total more than 185 kilometers in the region, "have become true driving forces for tourism in the region, generating wealth and employment through synergies between active tourism, nature tourism, cultural tourism, and gastronomic tourism."

He also reported that, according to data recorded by the counters, a total of 530,732 users used these roads in 2024. The busiest route was the Northwest route, accounting for 63 percent of the total (334,072).

The Northwest Greenway, the Campo de Cartagena Greenway, the Mazarrón Greenway, the El Hornillo Pier in Águilas, the Almendricos Greenway, the Cieza Chicharra Greenway, the Yecla Chicharra Greenway, and the Floración Greenway are all part of the Region's Greenway Network.

Since 2016, the Murcia Region Greenways Network has received around €10 million in funding from the Murcia Region Greenways Consortium, Feder funds, and the Institute of Tourism's own funds. These funds have been allocated to the development and creation of routes, infrastructure and signage development, repair work, and outreach and promotional activities.
