All the great empires of antiquity built their own libraries: Babylon, Rome, Greece, Egypt, and Byzantium, among others. Some of these great buildings are still in use today, while others have been rediscovered by archaeologists throughout history, having been destroyed primarily for military or religious reasons.
The oldest library still functioning is the Qarawiyyin in Morocco, founded in 859.
Libraries have been fundamental throughout human history for several reasons. Since ancient times, they have served as centers of knowledge and learning, preserving the wisdom of past civilizations.
II Ricote Valley Book Fair
They not only store books, but are also spaces where curiosity and critical thinking are fostered. Throughout history, they have been havens for thinkers, writers, and scientists, enabling the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of information. Furthermore, they have played a crucial role in education, making knowledge accessible to all, regardless of their background. In many cultures, libraries have been a symbol of progress and development, contributing to literacy and community empowerment.
Libraries are more than just buildings filled with books; they are pillars of culture and civilization, helping to shape society and preserve our history for future generations. They are true treasures of knowledge.
An example of this seasoned desire to preserve the knowledge of these centers since ancient times is offered by the 8 libraries of the Ricote Valley, which have joined forces again to organize the 2nd Ricote Valley Book Fair.
They have planned a joint cultural program that also aims to be a tourist attraction. Book presentations, exhibitions, theater, music, bookbinding workshops, and other activities will be held in each municipality.
The program presentation took place this weekend at the Padre Salmerón Library in Cieza.
The activities will take place from April 23 to 30.
