The Department of Culture announces that the deadline for submitting original submissions for the 1st Cieza City Short Story Contest is next Friday, September 30th.

The Cieza City Council, in an effort to promote creative writing and in recognition of the many Ciezans who have written and continue to write, launched the aforementioned competition in May of this year.

The rules specify that all persons born or residing in the municipality of Cieza, regardless of their nationality, may apply for the award.

Entries in this competition must be written in Spanish and unpublished. They must begin with the text written by writer Jerónimo Tristante during his visit to the 2nd Regional Children's and Young Adult Book Fair, held in Cieza in April of this year:

The vehicle reaches the end of Atalaya Road and stops. The stranger gets out, wrapping himself in a thick black anorak. It's cold, and the air cuts his skin. He climbs the steps that separate him from the chapel and approaches the corner where a huge, dark cross overlooks the small town.

Spring is imminent, and the peach trees in bloom bring back memories of another life. Below, a plain stretches out that moves him, a carpet of fuchsias, yellows, greens, and whites.

He looks down at the city. Will she still be there? How will he explain why he left? Why has he returned? He fears everyone's questions, and even more so, the answers he must give. Answers about that day when his life changed and he had to leave, to move away.
