The number of grants has increased compared to the previous edition, in a program that is endowed with 150,000 euros.
These grants are intended to consolidate the technical development of athletes and increase their presence in the most important national and international competitions.
A total of 85 high-performance athletes from the Region of Murcia received their 2018 scholarships today at a ceremony attended by the Regional Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Adela Martínez-Cachá. The number of scholarships awarded has increased compared to the previous year, when 73 athletes received them, and the total funding amounts to €150,000.
These grants are intended to enable the development or consolidation of the sporting performance and technical improvement of athletes and to increase their presence in the most relevant national and international sporting competitions.
“The goal is to give greater continuity to the work and programs that the federations are doing with our most outstanding or promising athletes. It's additional support so they can leave our borders and compete at the highest level,” added Adela Martínez-Cachá.
“In the regional government we are convinced that with these scholarships we are giving our athletes the opportunity to improve their performance, and proof of this is the number of successes that are being achieved almost every weekend,” said the head of Sports.
The proposals to access these scholarships are formalized by the federations and sent to the High Performance Athletes Commission of the Region of Murcia, composed of representatives of the General Directorate of Sports, the regional sports federations, the universities and athletes.
The number of women is increasing
In the previous edition, 28 women received scholarships, representing just over 38 percent of the total. This time, 35 women received scholarships, increasing the percentage by three points to over 41 percent.
The 85 athletes receiving scholarships from the Community belong to 23 different sports. Of these, athletics has the largest number of representatives (14), followed by canoeing (11), sailing and wrestling (seven each), and gymnastics and aeronautics with six.
