Cieza is experiencing its unique Holy Week with renewed passion through social media.

  • Pascual Lucas, mayor of Cieza: “We are going to experience a genuine Holy Week that
It will thrill the people of Cieza and remind us that the future is possible, it is near and
which we will soon be able to experience firsthand and on the street.”
  • Special audiovisual programming throughout the week and a program
    especially for Good Friday.

Holy Week in Cieza 2021 has finally arrived. A religious celebration that this year, due to the pandemic, will not take place in the streets of the town, but will be experienced intensely and passionately thanks to the social media of the City Council and the Board of Passion Brotherhoods.

Starting on Holy Monday, special audiovisual programs will be broadcast daily throughout Holy Week, featuring interviews with people connected to the day's processions. These broadcasts, directed by Antonio Liza, will give a voice to members of religious brotherhoods and confraternities, people who participate in the processions, and even residents of Cieza who live outside the town but experience Holy Week with equal or even greater intensity.

Finally, members of various artistic and professional guilds who regularly work to enhance and embellish the Holy Week processions and their floats, figures, costumes, etc., will be featured. These pre-recorded interviews will cover the daily life of Cieza during Holy Week, as well as the preparations and events leading up to the processions. All of this will be accompanied by images of the actual events captured in previous editions of this festival, which is seeking International Tourist Interest status.

According to Antonio Moya, the Tourism Councillor for the Cieza City Council, both the council and the Brotherhoods Association "have tried to bring Holy Week 2021 as close to reality as possible. We know it's not the same, that the celebration is experienced in the streets, in the processions, and within the intimacy of each brotherhood. But the people of Cieza deserved a special program this year. And the pandemic doesn't leave us with many options. So audiovisual productions are the best solution. As the Mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, said at the time, Cieza couldn't afford to go two years without Holy Week."

Triple program for Good Friday:

The most anticipated and authentic moment of Cieza's virtual Holy Week will unfold on Good Friday, when a unique musical and religious experience will be broadcast on social media, transporting the people of Cieza to the almost real setting of this very special day. They will be able to witness excerpts from the processions, identify the figures in the floats, and even listen to the processional marches that were performed live in previous sessions recorded at the Capitol Theatre.

The double feature for Good Friday will begin (via the social media channels of the Regional Government and the City Council) at 1:00 PM, with the first part of the Good Friday Special, specifically the segment dedicated to the Penitent Procession. At 8:30 PM, the second part of the Good Friday Special will be broadcast, featuring the Holy Burial Procession. The program will conclude at 9:30 PM with a special Good Friday feature including one-on-one interviews.

As indicated, in addition to the actual images of the processions from previous years, the programs will feature fragments recorded in the Theater and the performance of marches by the Averroes Musical Group of the OJE of Cieza.

A spectacle never seen before and which, in the words of the mayor, Pascual Lucas, “will thrill the people of Cieza and remind us that the future is possible, it is near and that very soon we will be able to experience our Holy Week firsthand and in the streets.”

In short, a special Holy Week that has been defined as a compendium of images, music, memories and characters related to Holy Week that will serve to show the world the fervent devotion that Cieza experiences and that confirms its genuine motto which reads: Holy Week of Cieza: One town, one Passion, one feeling'.
