Cieza is now part of the "Program of Actions and Support for the Rehousing of Families in Situations of Social Exclusion" of the Autonomous Community of Murcia. The mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, signed the protocol for the eradication of shantytowns and homelessness in the municipality this Monday at the Aguirre Palace in Cartagena.
The councilor stated that "this is not just a signature; it's a great step for our town, a hard-won and desired achievement by the Department of Social Policy. The program provides support to vulnerable families through action and support for rehousing in situations of social and residential exclusion."
The Regional Minister of Public Works and the Regional Minister of Social Policy signed this collaboration agreement with the mayors to provide families with a new opportunity to access a home. One hundred and three people have accessed one of the homes purchased and renovated by the regional government, of whom 62 were minors and 51 were adults.
The program to combat substandard housing in the Region of Murcia is thus expanded to the municipalities of Cartagena, Cieza, Fuente Álamo, Lorca, and Puerto Lumbreras. The goal is to facilitate access to housing for families and help them escape social exclusion.
A total of 113 people have already been able to access one of the homes purchased and conditioned by the Community. Of these, 62 were minors and 51 were adults.
This program, co-financed with European funds (ERDF and ESF) and the Autonomous Community, led by the regional government, has the collaboration of the Social Services of the municipalities participating in the program (Alcantarilla, Cartagena, Cieza, Fuente Álamo, Lorca, Murcia, Mazarrón, and Puerto Lumbreras) and the social organization Habito.
The Ministry of Development and Infrastructure is responsible for purchasing and adapting the homes for rehousing families. To do so, the needs of each family and their compliance with the required standards (proximity to services and integration into residential settings) are taken into account, along with the approval of the local councils and the NGO.
The acquired homes are then incorporated into the City Council's public housing stock to serve families experiencing social exclusion and severe vulnerability.
The Ministry of Women, Equality, LGBTI, Families, Social Policy, and Transparency, in coordination with municipal social services and Habito, monitors families to ensure their full social integration.
