Agreement to assist foreign seasonal workers in the fruit-growing campaign

An agreement between the City Council and Cáritas will facilitate emergency social assistance to address the needs of foreign seasonal workers arriving in Cieza between May and July for the fruit harvest season.

The aforementioned agreement, signed by Mayor Tomás Rubio and Cáritas officials, aims to address the urgent social needs arising from the months of May to July due to the arrival in Cieza of a large number of people seeking work during the fruit-picking season and lacking access to housing and basic services such as drinking water and sanitation. The Minister of Social Policies, Gertrudis Juliá, was also present at the signing of the agreement.

The intention is to provide temporary accommodation and adequate comprehensive care, ensuring the respect of the human rights of those who come to work temporarily during this season and lack access to housing and basic services.

The massive influx of these workers and their inability to find decent housing force many of them to settle in shanty towns they build themselves out of cardboard and plastic, or in dilapidated homes or industrial warehouses. In neither case do these shacks meet adequate living conditions, creating a dangerous situation for the people who live there, as well as an absolutely undignified situation for them, which becomes a social emergency requiring intervention to alleviate it as much as possible.

The lack of running water, electricity, toilets, etc., contributes to an unsustainable state of unhealthiness, generating tension and conflicts in the home.
