'Esparto Day' in Cieza

THE CULTURE OF ESPARTO, INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

The Esparto Museum will celebrate this declaration on Sunday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Convent Corner, with an intense program of activities (esparto workshops, esparto circles, painting contest, demonstrations of spinning and raking, exhibitions of photographs, tools and machinery, music of cuadrillas…) sponsored by the Cieza City Council.

Esparto grass is celebrating. And Cieza, too.The city par excellence for esparto grass, too. Last April, the Council of Ministers declared esparto grass culture a Representative Manifestation of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Among the cultural activities organized by the Esparto Museum of Cieza, the following stand out:
FIRST LOCAL PRIZE FOR PAINTING AND DRAWING “THE FOOTPRINTS OF ESPARTO”.

The event will take place on Sunday, May 19th at the Convent Corner, within an intense program of activities (esparto workshops, esparto circles, demonstrations of spinning and raking, exhibitions of photographs, tools and machinery, music of cuadrillas…).
To participate in the contest:

BASES:
1.- All local artists may participate, whether they are residents or not.

2.- The technique will be free and the supports will not exceed 1m on any of their sides, mounted on a frame, even in the case of watercolor or drawing.

3. The theme will be everything related to the culture of esparto grass: its landscapes, its people, the processes of elaboration and development, its tools and machinery, etc.

4. The following categories are established:
Youth category, from 12 to 17 years old.
Adult category, from 18 years of age and over.

5. Artists must arrive at the Plaza de la Esquina del Convento on May 19th with all the necessary materials for their work, including their easels. The artwork will be stamped between 9:00 and 10:00 AM at the Plaza de la Esquina del Convento, and the finished piece must be submitted there by 1:30 PM, at which time the project will be considered complete.

6. The works will be displayed in the square at the corner of the convent, mounted on their easel and with the reference number that will be given at the time of the sealing of the work.

7. From 13:30 to 14:00, the works will be evaluated by the judging panel, which will be made up of people related to art and will award the following prizes:
Youth Category: First, Second and Third prize, awarded to the most valued works and the prize will consist of Fine Arts material.
Adult Category:
FIRST PRIZE: Awarded by the CIEZA CITY COUNCIL ………………….300 Euros
SECOND PRIZE: Awarded by the MUSEUM OF ESPARTO………………………. 200 Euros
SPECIAL MENTION: Awarded by the SEMITIEL ART CENTER……….Fine Arts Material.

8. The Jury's decision will be final. Works awarded a cash prize will become the property of the awarding entity, and this act will conclude the competition.
