The spokesperson for the Socialist Parliamentary Group, Joaquín López, asserts that farmers' and cooperatives' groups, as well as environmentalists, are speaking out against fracking due to the damage it would cause to our land.
The meeting, which took place in Cieza this past Monday, May 21, was attended by the mayors of Calasparra, Caravaca, Moratalla, Bullas, and Mula, as well as the regional deputies responsible for the matter, González Tovar, Martínez Baños, and Navarro, led by Joaquín López, the group's spokesperson in Cartagena and regional deputy secretary of the PSRM.
To address some of our municipality's concerns, such as agriculture and environmental protection, the mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, called a meeting on the path to be taken to prevent our agriculture and landscapes from being damaged by fracking. "We have an obligation to present and lead a bill that won't lead to a Constitutional Court declaration of unconstitutionality. Fracking guarantees the contamination of our aquifers, and what would our farmers do in times of drought?" Lucas stated in his speech.
On the other hand, Joaquín López added, acknowledging the unanimous support for the declaration of a Fracking-Free Region of Murcia proposed by the PSRM (Regional Socialist Workers' Party) in line with environmental groups. Even so, he noted: "We believe this practice is very harmful, and that is why we will continue to present initiatives in the Regional Assembly and will lead a serious effort with the mayors and the entire PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) because we do not trust the Regional Government. The Ministry continues to accommodate these types of initiatives, and we must ensure that no project is carried out in our Region."
In this regard, we must declare the existence of a majority social rejection of this practice. Sectors that have sometimes not worked together have united around common goals, trying to ensure that the care of our Region is guaranteed by all institutions.
Finally, we would like to highlight the work carried out in the Congress of Deputies, where various initiatives have been presented to limit fracking and prevent its expansion throughout the country and region. From this moment on, the Socialist Party of the Region of Murcia, led by its mayors, is reforming a proposed regional law so that it does not incur a constitutional appeal due to the powers of each administration. They are also seeking support from the other parliamentary groups, trying to make the demands of a large part of our society a reality.
