Once again this year, Cieza's schoolchildren celebrated Arbor Day, which falls on March 21st, this Wednesday. They have not missed this commemorative event since the Municipal Environmental Education Program promoted its implementation in the town's schools. The Cieza City Council's Department of the Environment, headed by Francisco Martínez, is aware of the need to educate students about the value of trees.
At José Marín School, students planted radishes in seed trays recycled from yogurt containers, which they painted themselves so they could take them home. To do so, they had the help of instructors from the La Casa Azul Association and the technical staff of the Department of the Environment. First-grade students actively participated in planting two mastic trees and two oleanders in the school's playground.
Juan Ramón Jiménez School
At the Juan Ramón Jiménez School, similar activities were carried out by technicians from the Department of the Environment: the same manual activity was carried out for second-grade students and two ash trees were planted on the Paseo Don Antonio Salas, located near the school.
At the end of the activity in each of the centers, students, teachers, monitors, staff from the Parks and Gardens Service of Aguas de Cieza and the councilor of the branch were photographed together with the promotional poster of 'Tree cities of the world', a global program administered by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and Arbor Day Foundation, through which municipalities can apply to obtain the designation 'Trees cities of the world' as is the case of the municipality of Cieza.
Meanwhile, technicians from the municipal Environment and Social Services departments carried out a joint activity with residents of Cabezo de la Fuensantilla, as part of the 'Weaving Neighborhoods' project. During this activity, they planted five olive trees, two fig trees, and a laurel tree. They also established a community urban garden with seasonal vegetables.
