The Murcian Seed Network is a self-managed association whose work protects agricultural biodiversity, supports organic farming, and promotes food sovereignty through the recovery of local varieties and traditional knowledge.
The Network cultivates, conserves, and exchanges local varieties, primarily from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula. It also organizes training courses and workshops, all related to organic agricultural production and self-sufficiency. This honorable task has been carried out by this association for more than fifteen years, with the aim of rebuilding respectful ties with nature and improving our autonomy by recovering the agricultural knowledge we have been losing with the abandonment of the countryside, the industrialization of the agricultural model, and the arrival of so many processed products in the markets.
Every year, around September, the association organizes a meeting between its members and the organizations it collaborates with, open to the public to showcase its activities.
This annual gathering changes location each year to highlight the local varieties of the different regions of the region and the people who ensure that this cultural and agricultural heritage endures throughout the Segura basin.
Among the activities scheduled for Saturday are various workshops: seed cleaning and multiplication, esparto grass braiding for adults and children, and traditional dancing by Murcian musician and folklorist "El Pantorrillas," scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
There will also be a play area, a seed exchange table, a plant and seed sale, a tasting of traditional tomato varieties, and a Ciezano lunch. Coinciding with the association's tenth anniversary, the day's meeting will conclude with a free concert by the group "Trepacerros" at 8:00 p.m.
