This past Wednesday, the Cieza City Council held a meeting of mayors from the Vega Alta region to join forces and share ideas to form a united front in defense of the region's interests. These are, in the words of Tomás Rubio, mayor of Cieza, "important issues that must be addressed regardless of the political affiliation governing each municipality, but rather with the interests of our citizens in mind."
The meeting, also attended by regional representative Jesús Cano, served to agree on matters of "vital importance for the region." Among these, it was decided to work on the request to the Spanish Government to renew the Cartagena-Chinchilla line as it passes through Cieza, as it is vital for the socioeconomic and tourist development of the entire region. Furthermore, the implementation of the railway bypass could lead to the expansion of the Camarillas Dam, which could collect more than 80 cubic hectometres of water per year, which is currently unused and lost. Furthermore, at this same meeting, the proposal was also made to urge the regional government to build a new parking lot for the Cieza Hospital, "something that is urgent and necessary for the users of this hospital, as well as other healthcare improvements in Area IX."
Finally, the political leaders discussed other issues of interest to the Vega Alta del Segura region and committed to holding regular meetings, at least twice a year, "as these are very positive for the three municipalities in the region."
