Conferences, book presentations, debates, music, film, and exhibitions are some of the activities scheduled for these sessions, which begin tomorrow, Wednesday, April 12, and conclude on Thursday, April 27.
For nearly two decades, the Atalaya-Ateneo de la Villa de Cieza cultural association has been organizing "Republican Days" every April, coinciding with the anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic. These days aim to honor the memory of one of the most important democratic periods in Spanish history and to vindicate a republican horizon.
In fact, this "Republican Week" has become an unmissable event for those Ciezans who wish to remember and pay tribute to those who, with their work, contributed to the development of the Second Republic and were later repressed by the Franco regime.
With the electoral victory of the anti-dynastic parties, the Republic was proclaimed in Cieza, as well as in towns and cities throughout Spain, on April 14, 1931. Chaired by José Templado Martínez, the Republican-Socialist Municipal Administrative Commission was established at the Town Hall. As in the rest of Spain, the proclamation took place amidst an atmosphere of great joy and peaceful demonstrations.
That day, for millions of Spaniards, a new era of hope began, which, despite all the limitations inherent in the times, represented the most profound attempt at modernization undertaken in our country to date. In reality, many of the ideals and aspirations of that Republic are still valid today or are being developed in our constitutional system.
Numerous activities have been held over the years to commemorate these Republican Days, and numerous personalities associated with the recovery of Democratic Memory have participated. True to its purpose, the Atalaya-Ateneo de la Villa Club is preparing to celebrate the anniversary of that event this year as well. It does so with the following program of events:
