The Cieza City Council is going to start a new improvement project on the Riverside Promenade, included within the Project for the execution of actions for the reduction of the risk of flooding, recovery of the riverside forest and the Segura Natural Path as it passes through Cieza.
This project aims to improve the environment of the Segura River, strengthen the riparian forest by increasing tree cover, reduce risks associated with flooding events and advance the continuity of the Segura Natural Path to Almadenes, with the objective of being recognized as a Natural Path by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
The action is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination, financed with funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and responds to the need to increase the tree cover and biodiversity of the Riverside Promenade, improving one of the spaces in the municipality most valued by residents and visitors.
One of the most sensitive aspects, and one that may attract the most attention from users, will be the removal of trees that are dead, dying, or that have severe phytopathological damage that makes their short-term survival unfeasible and may also compromise the safety of the environment and especially of pedestrians.
These specimens will be replaced by selected native riverside trees that will increase the tree cover of the area, which has been greatly reduced in recent years.
To ensure the proper development of the new specimens, the intervention will also include soil improvement and the installation of an irrigation system to ensure the viability of the trees during their initial establishment phases.
