The Cieza City Council has received a special mention from the jury for its project \u201c#CiezaBiof\u00edlica \u2013 From the placebo tree to the medicine tree\u201d in the 2022 Tree Award of the Madrid Cities Forum<\/p>\n
The jury, made up of experts from the Master's Program in Historic Gardens and Ecosystem Services of Green Infrastructure at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, has decided to award a special mention to the municipality of Cieza for the quality of the project presented, recognizing the work of the municipality in the area of Urban Nature and new management of green spaces.<\/p>\n
The Cieza City Council's proposal implements a new urban tree management model based on the principles of modern arboriculture. This increases the city's tree cover as a strategy to adapt to global warming, shifting from small, over-managed, expensive-to-maintain trees with little benefit (the placebo tree) to large, natural trees with less risk, lower management costs, and greater benefits (the medicinal tree).<\/p>\n
Antonio Moya, the councilor for Circular Economy, explains that \u201ca global change in strategy is underway for the management of the municipality's urban green spaces, as we move towards a biophilic model that uses the power of trees and plants as medicine, not merely as an aesthetic element. This strategy is primarily based on recent scientific studies that demonstrate the influence of trees, especially large ones, on improving numerous health conditions linked to urban lifestyles.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this sense, it has been shown that living near highly naturalized streets considerably improves conditions such as autism or hyperactivity in children, anxiety and depression, asthma or cardiorespiratory diseases among others, it has also been shown that life expectancy can be increased by up to 8 years and the probability of suffering from certain types of cancer such as breast cancer is reduced, which more than compensates for the 'inconveniences or disservices' associated with their presence, such as the case of falling leaves or flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year's Tree Prize has received applications from cities with up to 15 million inhabitants, with a wide variety of projects.<\/p>\n
According to the Forum's director, Lola Gonz\u00e1lez, "this award was created with the aim of recognizing, supporting and disseminating good practices carried out in the urban environment to improve green infrastructure and thereby the quality of life of citizens, within a framework of promoting the biophilic city that fosters natural spaces and the connection of the population with the environmental values of their urban habitat, promoting health and well-being in a sustainable way."<\/p>\n
The Mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, attended the handover ceremony on behalf of the City Council, accompanied by the Councillor for Circular Economy, Antonio Moya, who was invited to participate along with experts and representatives from the cities of Huesca and Valladolid in a panel discussion on good practices in urban nature.<\/p>\n
