Based on the novel of the same name by Penelope Fitzgerald, the film tells the story of a widow&#039;s quest to open a bookshop in an English village with little empathy for the need or passion for reading, for which she enlists the help of a little girl and a misanthropic old man.<\/p>\n<p>The town&#039;s powerful, predators behind their aristocratic manners, will declare covert war on this sweet intruder, convinced that what she intends to sell could bring pleasure, knowledge, adventure, or balm to a few neighbors.
