These days, the event seeks to reclaim the memory of one of the most important democratic periods in the history of Spain and to vindicate a republican horizon. In fact, this "Republican Week" has become an unmissable event for those Ciezans who wish to remember and pay tribute to those who, through their work, contributed to the development of the Second Republic and were later persecuted by the Franco regime.

With the electoral victory of the anti-dynastic parties, the Republic was proclaimed in Cieza, as well as in towns and cities throughout Spain, on April 14, 1931. That day, for millions of people, a new era of hope began, which, despite all the limitations inherent in the period, represented the most profound attempt at modernization undertaken in our country to date. In reality, many of the ideals and aspirations of that Republic are still valid today or are being developed in our constitutional system.

Programming for 2024

This year, the Atalaya Club pays tribute to each and every Republican woman during the event, in gratitude for their shared struggle to keep their memory alive. In 1931, with the arrival of the Second Republic, all these demands began to take shape and solidify, and the number of women's groups grew, as did the inclusion of women's sections in most political parties.

With the change of regime, we will enter a period in which political and legislative transformations will significantly change the status, participation, and rights of women: equality before the law, divorce law, recognition of paternity, legislation on prostitution, laws that help implement family planning, the right to education and women's suffrage, as well as the progressive incorporation of women into the workforce on equal terms with men.

The way in which women's participation was reduced or eliminated after Franco's victory—in all areas of society where they had fully participated, relegating them to the home—was radical. Just read a text by Marichu de la Mora, one of the authors of the Falange Women's Section: "One thing is clear in our feminine spirit: that, in short, finally! There is a State that is dedicated to fulfilling the dream of so many Spanish women: to be homemakers."

Part of history

The establishment of the dictatorship would be the counterpoint, the one responsible for putting an end to all the rights that women had worked so hard to achieve. Feminism and feminist demands were particularly persecuted by fascism, and the repression was both designed and targeted. The legacy of republican women has come down to us, nourishing, among other things, the so-called "granddaughters/grandsons" generation. The role of these women and their enormous sacrifice have been fundamental in the construction of democracy. They and their example keep the republican legacy alive in the most adverse circumstances.

Programming:

Sunday, April 14, 12:00 p.m.

Opening of the exhibition "The Image of Unity: CNT and UGT Between the Revolution and the War (1934-1939)." Anselmo Lorenzo Foundation.

Recital of republican couplets and toast to the Republic.

Wednesday, April 17, 8:00 p.m.

Short Film Screening at the 3rd Historical Memory Competition for Young People “Our Future is Our History.”

Thursday, April 18, 8:00 p.m.

Lecture "Women of the Second Spanish Republic.
