The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and the Environment has implemented a phytosanitary treatment for the elms in our municipality in response to a plague affecting the trees of what is considered Europe's most significant Ulmus minor tree formation, which includes our well-known Maripinar Olmeda.<\/p>\n
Specifically, the five consecutive years of drought, combined with heat waves, have favored the proliferation of the elm leaf beetle (Xanthogaleruca luteola). This is a small green beetle that feeds on elm leaves and causes leaf loss or significant loss in mid-summer.<\/p>\n
The Director General of the Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosauro, stated that "technicians from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment assessed the situation and condition of the elm grove, concluding that this attack does not constitute a serious impact on the physiology of the trees, but it does affect their vigor and photosynthetic activity, making them more vulnerable to attack by other pathogens."<\/p>\n
For this reason, treatment work has begun in all the elm groves around Cieza to prevent other, more serious diseases. This work is being done in collaboration with the General Directorate of Roads of the Ministry of the Presidency and Development to treat the masses located along the edges of roads that require treatment.<\/p>\n
As part of the regional government's Forestry Action Plan, the Directorate General for the Environment is making a significant effort to address the situation by applying a phytosanitary treatment against this beetle species using a pyrethroid insecticide, specifically for this species and authorized in the Registry of Phytosanitary Products of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food, and the Environment.<\/p>\n
The work has begun in the rural area of Cieza and ended in the famous Olmeda de Maripinar, thereby avoiding the inconvenience that adult leaf beetles cause to nearby homeowners when they enter homes, as they are not a species that affects human health.<\/p>\n
Forest Action Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n The 2017-2021 Forest Action Plan aims to make the Region's forest cover (511,293 hectares) a sustainable source of well-being, stable employment, and wealth. It also aims to turn the challenges of climate change into opportunities and combat desertification and the Region's water shortage.<\/p>\n Among the ten action programs is the specific Forest Health and Statistics program, which has an investment of \u20ac4,827,000. This program, which includes comprehensive pest control measures, is essential to ensuring the health of forest areas.
