On Friday, June 13th, at 8:00 PM, the book presentation of "They Shall Not Pass! Biography of Dolores Ib\u00e1rruri, Pasionaria," by historian and journalist Mario Amor\u00f3s, will take place at the Atalaya Club. Dolores Ruiz-Ib\u00e1rruri, better known as "Lola," Pasionaria's granddaughter, will be in attendance. The event will be hosted by historian Antonio Fern\u00e1ndez Ortiz.<\/p>\n
After publishing biographies of Pablo Neruda, Salvador Allende, and Augusto Pinochet, among others, Mario Amor\u00f3s returns with a volume that traces the history of the Spanish Communist Party through the lens of Dolores Ib\u00e1rruri. Drawing on exceptional and largely unpublished documentation (such as Dolores Ib\u00e1rruri's personal archive), the author has written a rigorous and, above all, essential biographical account of one of the great figures of the international communist and labor movement, a figure essential to understanding the history of contemporary Spain.<\/p>\n
The entire country trembles with indignation at these heartless men who, through fire and terror, seek to plunge democratic and popular Spain into a hell of terror. But "they shall not pass." That legendary radio call of July 19, 1936, transformed Dolores Ib\u00e1rruri, then a Popular Front deputy for Asturias, into the universal symbol of republican resistance to fascism. Born in the heart of the Vizcayan mining region and a member of the Communist Party of Spain since its founding\u2014exactly a century ago\u2014it was in the crucible and tragedy of the Civil War that the myth of Pasionaria was forged. After the bitter defeat of 1939, she endured a long exile of four decades, mainly in the Soviet Union. She assumed the position of general secretary of the PCE in the midst of World War II, during which her son Rub\u00e9n, a Red Army officer, died in the Battle of Stalingrad. Returning to Spain in 1977, the image of Dolores Ib\u00e1rruri arm in arm with Rafael Alberti in the Congress of Deputies is one of the most iconic images of the Transition.
