Leonor L\u00f3pez Lucas (Cieza 1903- Mexico City 1970) was an outstanding woman, and
\nLike so many others in the difficult 1930s and 1940s, exceptional.
\nComing from a humble family, she studied to be a midwife, and as
\nmidwife and socialist activist dedicated her life to fighting for justice and the rights of
\nWomen. Her story, and that of her daughter Piedad Semitiel L\u00f3pez (Nachi), a doctor
\nsolidarity and republican girl, are the central axis of the documentary Women of Life and
\nMemory, stories of an exile;, directed by Joaqu\u00edn Berruecos, which will be screened
\nat the Atalaya Club.<\/p>\n
This audiovisual work narrates, divided into 15 chapters and with a duration of about
\n45 minutes, the chronicle of five generations of women marked by the War
\nSpanish Civil and Migration.<\/p>\n
Through the writings and memories of Nachi, 97 years old and with admirable lucidity,
\nreconstructs the life of his mother Leonor L\u00f3pez and that of his family: leaving the town
\nafter the victors broke into his house on the Paseo and looted it
\nThey would take all the books out of the library to burn them; the clandestine passage of the
\nPyrenees; the hardships suffered in the internment camps after exile in
\nFrance, the reunion with Father Andr\u00e9s Semitiel Rubio, a medical practitioner
\nand surgery, the difficult years on a farm during the Nazi occupation\u2026<\/p>\n
Until the beginning of September 42, Andr\u00e9s obtained a position at the embassy of
\nMexico in Paris, the status of political refugee. \u201cThen,\u201d Nachi recalls,
\nWe moved to Marseille to board the ship Marichal Lyautey which
\nHe took us to the port of Casablanca, Morocco. We stayed there for a few days.
\nuntil we set sail on Saturday, September 19, 1942 aboard the Nyassa towards
\nthe port of Veracruz in Mexico. We arrived on Saturday, October 17, 1942. It was
\nThanks to Mexican President L\u00e1zaro C\u00e1rdenas, who opened his hands to everything
\nSpanish political exile\u2026 \u201c<\/p>\n
The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Joaqu\u00edn Berruecos and
\nMar\u00eda Semitiel, a direct relative of the protagonist.<\/p>\n
