A statement from the Cieza City Council's Department of Public Works reports that, on January 26, 2018, the company developing the natural gas distribution network damaged a cavity belonging to the former oil mill, consisting of a vaulted structure built with masonry and resting on the so-called "Losa del Pueblo" (Town's Loss).<\/p>\n

Before giving instructions to the company promoting the works and making an assessment of the actions to be carried out for the replacement of the vault and the road, the Historical Heritage Service of the City Council was consulted, from which a report was sent describing the construction as one of the artificial caves belonging to a 17th century oil mill, cataloged as a civil building in the General Urban Planning Plan of the municipality of Cieza, with Grade I protection, that is, comprehensive protection, so it must maintain its architectural and constructive characteristics and also has Grade III protection, which corresponds to environmental protection, since the 'Casa Grande' oil mill is included in a garden in the old town of Cieza.<\/p>\n

The report warns of the risk of the vault collapsing and indicates that, to avoid damage, the listed property's gas pipeline must be rerouted and the cave's vault rebuilt. The actions to be carried out must be communicated to the General Directorate of Cultural Assets of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.<\/p>\n

Currently, the goal is to preserve the cave and the remaining ancient buildings of the old olive mill. To this end, the construction of a protective structure that would also allow traffic to pass above it is being considered. This is compounded by the cracks and instability of the village slab that forms the cave. Therefore, the necessary geotechnical studies are pending to carry out the work safely.<\/p>\n

In a press release, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure expressed its regret for the inconvenience caused by this situation, which is "totally beyond our control and which we are trying to resolve as efficiently and expeditiously as possible.
