On March 14th, at 8:00 p.m., the Cieza Social History Collective will visit the Siyâsa Museum.

In this new series, they recall key events in history: "Using literary fiction, we rescue testimonies and events that were forgotten in textbooks. In this new series of presentations, we have focused on episodes that we consider important for understanding the recent history of Spain." The Cieza Social History Collective employs innovative dissemination methods, such as audiovisual materials and social media, to reach a wide audience. Furthermore, to reclaim social history, it includes popular literature and fragments that witnessed the events narrated.

The group was founded in 2017 with the aim of channeling critical reflection on the subject of historical study, situating it within society. The lack of knowledge of our past contributes to the sense of confusion we live in. The collective asserts: "Now, more than ever, against the intentional forgetting and the attempted control of history, we must fight for our memory and rescue the life stories of those who dedicated themselves to the defense of justice, freedom, and equality." In its presentations, the group brings to light the perspective forgotten in history textbooks, uncovering through social research those stories that "we are not told." They launched this new series of lectures at the University of Murcia with historian Fernando Hernández Sánchez, and subsequently took their teaching project to cities such as Caravaca de la Cruz, Alhama de Murcia, and Molina.

The presentations are part of the "5th Conference on Education for the 21st Century: A Perspective from the Sciences and Arts," a reflection on the educational model organized by the University of Murcia, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, the El Agua Science Museum, Murcia, and the Francisco Rabal Regional Film Library. Other local contributions include the Cieza City Council, the Forum for Thought and Dialogue, the Atalaya Club, the Los Albares Secondary School, Cieza Ciudad Educadora, the Maestro Gómez Villa Music Conservatory, and the Cajamurcia Foundation.

Perhaps, as Ernest Renan asserted, nations live and survive by forgetting their own past. Often, executioners need to forget their cruelty, and victims their pain and humiliation; but it is all of humanity that could perish through ignorance, forgetfulness, and the falsification of history. The group asserts that history must be rigorous: it marks and influences the future. “The future of humanity depends on the future of the past,” they conclude.

The Cieza Social History Collective, which began its lecture series at the University of Murcia and has taken its presentations to various locations throughout the region, is returning to the town.

[2
