With walls nearly one hundred meters vertical, the Segura River flows through a narrow gorge nine kilometers long. Pure nature, untouched by any signs of human life or development. If a visit to the Cueva de la Serreta (Serreta Cave) stirs the senses, contemplating the magnificence of this natural enclave from within it leaves one breathless. Words cannot adequately describe the moment of peering into the gorge. The opening of the interpretation center will help visitors understand this prodigious place sculpted by nature, water, and time.

Satisfied. That's how the mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, and the councilor for Tourism, Antonio Moya, left the Almadenes Canyon Interpretation Center this Thursday after their visit with the manager of Mediampar SL, Antonio Casas, and members of the municipal council. After several weeks of operation, this morning they learned firsthand about the features and services of this facility, which aspires to become a key tool for promoting one of the most stunning natural areas in the Region of Murcia.

The councilor affirmed that the interpretation center "is progressing well after overcoming a series of challenges" and described the building as "a valuable tool for disseminating the rich natural and cultural heritage of this natural area," which includes rock shelters and caves with cave paintings declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He also emphasized the "very positive" consequences its opening will have for nature tourism. "We must all work together to promote the canyon and seize the opportunities that now present themselves."

For the Tourism Councillor, these new facilities will be a key element in the conservation of the area. In fact, the Special Protection Plan already pointed to the existence of growing, disorganized, and spontaneous tourism, which was seen as a potential threat to the conservation of the area's main assets as early as the late 1990s. "Therefore, the proposed actions for conservation and socioeconomic development have included the implementation of a series of criteria aimed at organizing and regulating public use, among which was the creation of a visitor center and reception area."

With its implementation, Moya adds, "the establishment of an educational program becomes a reality, one that informs visitors about the natural, archaeological, and cultural values of the protected area, instilling positive attitudes and behaviors through on-site educational experiences, as well as active and nature tourism activities compatible with the conservation of the area's values." Located on the right bank of the Segura River, downstream from the gorge, next to the hydroelectric plant, it occupies a privileged position due to the excellent views it offers.

The facility features an open visitor reception area and an interpretive zone dedicated to the Almadenes Canyon and its environmental significance. It also includes an auditorium, activity rooms, storage for sports and nature equipment, a cafeteria, administrative offices, and parking. This pioneering facility in the Region of Murcia is environmentally sustainable, as it is energy independent and fully integrated into its surroundings, making nature an integral part of the building.

Source and image: Cieza City Council.
