Professor of Biochemistry at the Autonomous University of Madrid (1973). Co-founder in 1974 of the Severo Ochoa Center for Molecular Biology and its director until 1978. Minister of Education and Science (1981-1982).<\/p>\n
He has presided over the Culture of Peace Foundation since 2000. In 2005 he was appointed by the Secretary
\nUN General, co-chair of the High-Level Group for the Alliance of Civilizations. He chaired the International Commission against the Death Penalty from its creation in 2010 until 2017.<\/p>\n
He is a member of multiple national and international organizations, academies and associations, including: the Spanish Society of Biochemistry, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Biochemical Society of the United Kingdom, etc.<\/p>\n
He has received decorations and distinctions from different countries and has been named Doctor Honoris
\nHe has been a professor at numerous national and international universities. In 2007, he was awarded the Mare Terra recognition at the ONES Mediterr\u00e1nea Awards for his work in the fight for equality, social justice, and environmental protection.<\/p>\n

\nA new chapter is being written in the history of humanity, and in particular, of the
\nOur species' relationship with planet Earth. We are acquiring a different appreciation
\nof the temporal rhythm of history, in a rapid sequence of political and social events,
\ncultural and environmental factors that have changed our perception of ourselves
\nas individuals and as members of the community, which poses a challenge to our ability
\nto manage global trends.<\/p>\n
It is now that the phrase with which the Letter begins acquires its full meaning.
\nThe United Nations, established in 1945: "We the peoples\u2026", because it has been achieved
\nwidespread awareness of the equal dignity of all human beings, whatever they may be
\nThe difference between them\u2026All equal without discrimination or exclusion of any kind.
\nIt's time for action. We can't wait any longer; history and the consequences of our actions will be revealed.
\nOur actions as a species reach us and even surpass us; to remain mere spectators
\ndistracted, impassive, fixated on completely trivial matters,
\nIt inevitably leads us to unmitigated disaster; nor can we allow that
\nimmense media power replaces reason with emotion and closes our eyes to
\nWhat is happening now, what is about to happen. The media are
\nparticularly influential, and it is imperative to curb the excess of fake news that
\nThey broadcast, sadly transformed into "the voice of their master," the megaphone of whoever pays them.<\/p>\n
We must react firmly; we must keep our distinctive abilities firmly in mind.
\nof the human species: to think, to imagine, to anticipate, to innovate\u2026 to create! Every human being is capable
\nto create, to direct one's own life with meaning, to build a future for everyone, is
\nour hope.<\/p>\n
And there will be no hope or future if we do not achieve the immediate implementation of the
\nThe 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which in reality constitutes a new vision of
\nworld. And for that, it is essential that young people become aware of the wonder it represents
\nThe improbable nature of human life. All different, yet equal. We cannot be isolationists.
\nwhen we need to act together more than ever, because we all live in the
\nsame world and we cannot isolate ourselves from it.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, the new era will not wait until humanity is ready to act
\nin the face of global threats. If humanity wants to have a future, it must anticipate
\nto them and act accordingly.<\/p>\n
Let no one say it is impossible. The great responsibility of all beings today
\nFor humans, it is to demonstrate to future generations that they were able to rise to the occasion.
\ntheir astonishing intellectual faculties. That they were able to create, to offer them a
\na future to live in.
