Cieza is once again in luck. March 30, 2023, will be remembered as an extraordinary date for irrigators and the people of Cieza: The management of the Cieza I and Cieza II wells, owned by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, has finally been entrusted to the Central Board of Users of the Vega Alta de Cieza.
The commission serves to clearly and significantly optimize our municipality's water concessions and resources. The President of the Central Irrigation Board, Isidoro Ruiz, stated that we are "facing a historic day in which Cieza's agriculture is in luck." He took the opportunity to thank the Mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, for "moving heaven and earth, along with the President of the confederation, Mario Urrea, to achieve something historic. It's not raining; underground resources, as the Councilor for Agriculture, Antonio Moya, recently stated in a statement, are noticeably diminishing, so the Cieza I and Cieza II Wells are an important complement to the water that is lacking elsewhere. All the irrigation communities involved are very happy; you can't even imagine; this means maintaining the town's wealth."
For his part, Mario Urrea stated that "our commitment to irrigators is total and absolute, which is why the confederation works daily to meet demands while always respecting the law and protecting the environment. What we have sought this time is to optimize. Until now, the wells could only be used during a declared drought, but we have managed to find a more secure legal framework to bring the wells online as quickly as possible."
The Mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, began the historic event by stating, “It hasn't been easy, but after years of dedication, we've made it possible. I am extremely grateful for the work done by the President of the Confederation, Mario Urrea, and the Water Commissioner, Javier García, who have worked and fought this great challenge alongside the President of the Central Irrigation Board, representing all the Irrigation Communities in our municipality, and with the Cieza City Council, until a legal solution was found to meet the current needs. I would also like to emphasize that the intervention and support of the Government Delegate, Pepe Vélez, has been crucial in making the significant success we are celebrating today a reality.”
