The Cieza City Council takes another step towards sustainable management of
green infrastructure incorporating a wood chipper into the service of Parks and
Grounds.

vegetables.

The shredded material is used as mulch, improving the
soil structure and fertility, reducing water evaporation and
limiting the growth of weeds. Furthermore, this material provides
nutrients naturally, avoiding the need to purchase amendments
external organic sources, which translates into direct savings in purchasing costs
of materials and greater self-sufficiency of the service.

Implementing this practice also entails a significant reduction in
the costs associated with the transport and management of plant waste, by avoiding the
transfer to treatment plants or authorized managers.

Taken together, these measures improve the economic and environmental efficiency of
service and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of municipal activity.
This initiative falls within the objectives established by the Law
7/2022 on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy, as well
as in the guidelines of the European Green Deal, which promote prevention
in waste generation and the valorization of natural resources.

It also complements the work undertaken by the Regional Councils,
that since last year they have incorporated another wood chipper into the tasks of
cleaning and removal of reeds and invasive species in the river environment

carbon, advancing in the commitments acquired as a signatory of the Green
City Accord, of which the municipality is a part thanks to the LIFE- project
GreenMe5.

The Councillor for Services and Environment, Francisco Martínez, has highlighted
that, “with this measure, we continue to close the loop on green waste,
transforming what was once waste into a resource that enriches
our soils, improves the health of trees and contributes to a healthier city
habitable, efficient and resilient to climate change.”
