The Brotherhood of Saint Veronica, in collaboration with the Department of Sports of the Cieza City Council and FAMU, organized the 16th San Silvestre “City of Cieza” Antonio S. Piñera López Memorial race this Wednesday.
One of the most traditional end-of-year events, the San Silvestre “Ciudad de Cieza” Antonio S. Piñera López Memorial race, celebrated its 16th edition this Wednesday. The main race covered a distance of approximately 5.8 km, starting and finishing at the Convent Corner, and was organized by the Brotherhood of Saint Veronica in collaboration with the Sports Department of the Cieza City Council and the Athletics Federation of the Region of Murcia.
The event also paid special tribute to the memory of the popular Cieza athlete Juan Morcillo, "el Seco," by presenting a plaque of honor to his widow and daughter, and by officially retiring his bib number 744, the last one Juan wore in the 2023 Cieza San Silvestre race. This was undoubtedly a very special and well-deserved gesture for someone beloved and remembered by all who knew him.
The overall male victory went to Domingo Puerta, from Atletismo Cieza, 1st Senior with a time of 18:17, followed by the 2nd in that category Mario Fernández, from ADA Abarán, in 18:38, as well as the 1st Junior Álvaro Moreno, from Vive Cieza Team, who stopped the clock at 18:39.
On the women's side, the victory went to Beatriz Román, the 1st Veteran A athlete from Cárnicas Serrano, finishing in 20:55, ahead of Rocío Morote, the 1st Senior from UCAM Athleo Cieza, in 22:16, with Anna Tenorio, also from UCAM Athleo Cieza, finishing 3rd and 2nd Senior, in 22:48.
