Since its last resurfacing in 2022, the children's pool at the Mariano Rojas Sports Center has caused numerous scrapes and abrasions to its users, which is why emergency action was taken last season to address the situation.
This season, after repeated cases of chafing, abrasions, and cuts, the Sports Department decided to close the facility and carefully investigate the actual cause of the injuries reported by users.
The analysis concluded, contrary to previous beliefs, that the cause of these abrasions is that the materials used to refurbish the pool are too slip-resistant, to the point that their abrasion level is too high for the type of pool user.
The children's pool basin is closed
Subsequently, municipal technicians consulted various industry professionals and manufacturers, visited other facilities, and conducted several inspections of the facility in order to carry out emergency action and reopen it as soon as possible this season. These consultations resulted in solutions that do not guarantee the final result, primarily in terms of user safety, and certification of its suitability in relation to current regulations regarding public pool flooring could not be obtained.
Given this lack of guarantees regarding the outcome of this action and in order to protect the safety of the children and their companions, the difficult decision has been made to keep this reservoir closed for the remainder of the bathing season. We deeply regret the inconvenience this causes to the little ones and propose a renovation for the next season.
Given this situation, the Department of Sports requests the utmost understanding of the Sports Center's users and hopes that, with a view to next season, the youngest members of the pool, its primary users, will be able to fully enjoy their pool once the necessary work is completed.
