Twelve new school cafeterias will be added to the 269 existing cafeterias in the Region's public schools during the 2023-2024 school year. The work, which represents a total investment of €700,000 and is financed by the Autonomous Community and most local councils, is underway in most schools. The projects primarily involve creating spaces for cafeterias, food preparation areas, and adapting restrooms for people with reduced mobility.
These include the school cafeterias at Villa Alegría in San Pedro del Pinatar; San Fulgencio in Pozo Estrecho; Príncipe de España in Alhama de Murcia; Vista Alegre in Las Torres in Cotillas; La Purísima in Molina de Segura; Pascual Martínez in Pliego; San Bartolomé in Cieza; Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta in Archena; and the Artero and Obispos García Ródenas Primary Schools in Bullas. Murcia City Council is also carrying out work to open the cafeterias at Barriomar and Pintor Pedro Cano Primary Schools in Puente Tocinos. In total, they will be able to serve around 600 students.
The Regional Ministry awarded lunch scholarships to 8,500 students during the 2022-2023 academic year, ensuring that families most in need could access this assistance service. The investment was four million euros.
School cafeterias offer quality and balanced meals. In addition, counselors conduct health and nutrition promotion activities during the two hours a day that students spend in the cafeteria.
