Students from the Gerónimo Belda School planted an elm tree in Medina Siyâsa Park on Thursday, June 5th, to celebrate World Environment Day. They received a visit from the Councilor for Environment, Francisco Martínez, and the Councilor for Education, María Turpín.
World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, is a call to protect our environment and take immediate action to combat plastic pollution #BeatPlasticPollution.
Plastic, from the moment it's produced to the moment it's discarded, contributes to the climate crisis and environmental degradation. It pollutes the soil, blocks water supplies, and damages ecosystems. These effects force people to move in search of much more sustainable and safer living conditions.
In 2024, disasters led to nearly 46 million new displacements. Without immediate action, climate and environmental hazards will continue to force millions of people to move.
Combating plastic pollution must be part of the solution. Migrants and diasporas are key players in addressing environmental challenges. They provide essential skills, knowledge, and resources to support green solutions and build resilient communities.
IOM reaffirms its commitment to continue providing sustainable solutions to displacement and reducing its environmental impact, while empowering those most affected by the challenges of climate change. We call on all stakeholders to take bold, coordinated steps to combat plastic pollution, support people on the move, and achieve a much healthier planet for all.
