The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for the star product of Ciezano agriculture, the peach, was officially presented this morning in Berlin, the German capital, at the most important international fruit and vegetable fair, Fruit Logistica.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Cieza, Tomás Rubio, accompanied by the Councilor for Agriculture, Manuel Martínez, and the Second Deputy Mayor, Mari Ángeles Ruiz; the President of the PGI Governing Council, Manuel Ruiz; the Minister of Agriculture of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, Sara Rubira; and the President of FECOAM, Santiago Martínez.
Likewise, the Spanish ambassador to Germany, Ricardo Martínez Vázquez, and the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food, Begoña García Bernal, were able to see this Ciezano peach quality seal in person.
Tomás Rubio noted that "you share the most genuine thing you have when you share what is original; when you share what is your identity, your signature, you are also sharing your life. When we bring the peach from Cieza to Fruit Logistica, we showcase the originality of this product through its PGI (Generally Produced Product), and with it we offer the best we have: our life, our culture, what identifies us as Ciezans and farmers. Today we bring peaches to Fruit Logistica just as parents used to take home a bag of this magnificent and delicious fruit so their children could enjoy it."
The Ciezano peach has officially held the PGI quality seal since last year.
In 2023, the European Union granted final approval for the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) 'Melocotón de Cieza', so since then this product can also be labeled with the quality seal in the international market, which means it meets the conditions to be exported with this differentiated quality seal.
Denominations of Origin (DO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) ensure the recognition and promotion of products, in addition to highlighting the work carried out by their producers, linked to tradition and sustainability.
Two peach varieties are included in the Protected Geographical Indication, specifically Baby Gold 6 and Romea, with an annual production of around 12 million kilos. The PGI also covers growers in the municipalities of Cieza, Abarán, Calasparra, and Jumilla.
The municipality of Cieza is considered the largest peach producer in Europe, with 15,000 hectares of irrigated land and a production volume of around 180 million kilos per year.
Any consumer in the world can now tell, just by looking at the product, that it is a peach recognized and distinguished for its quality and sustainable production, offering an extra guarantee to the markets.
