The president of the Taibilla Canals Association, Francisca Baraza, has announced that more than 17 million euros will be allocated for the contracting of works, services and supplies in the provinces of Albacete, Murcia and Alicante.
The Taibilla Canals Association will allocate a total of 10,628,244 euros to complete the works to improve the pumping of the Cieza branch and 3,190,901 euros to improve the supply to Mula, among other actions authorized by the Executive Committee that has been held at the headquarters of its central offices.
The president of the MCT, Francisca Baraza, has pointed out that “the approval of these projects is in line with the objectives set out in the MCT Strategic Plan 2020-2024 which is being developed through the Infrastructure Master Plan for the Optimization of the Supply System of the MCT 2023-2050, recently reviewed and updated.
Also noteworthy is the one million euro contract for the execution of the undergrounding of the 3 KV high-voltage overhead line, between the Taibilla reservoir (Nerpio) and the Toma Dam, whose fundamental objective is the protection of birds against collision and electrocution on high-voltage power lines.
Baraza also reported on the other matters discussed at the Executive Committee meeting, "in which authorizations were approved to contract works and services in the provinces of Murcia and Alicante for a budget exceeding 17 million euros."
The MCT will invest a total of 1,789,962.30 euros in the facade rehabilitation project of the Alicante II desalination plant; 1,159,829.53 euros in the repair project of a section of the Alicante canals and 338,561.55 euros in the adaptation of the Agency's roads and paths on the way up to Tentegorra.
The Executive Committee meeting also included a report on the Taibilla Canals Consortium's production based on the resources used. Rainfall at the reservoir dam in May 2023 was 47 liters per square meter, bringing the accumulated rainfall for the current hydrological year to 232.3 l/m², significantly lower than the 284.7 l/m² recorded up to that month in the 2021-2022 hydrological year.
Production in June 2023 was 18.51 hm3 (0.42 % lower than the same month last year), although the accumulated production in this hydrological year (October 2022 – June 2023) amounts to 149.04 hm³ (3.89 % higher than the same period corresponding to the 2021-2022 hydrological year).
The MCT is a public body under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge that plays a vital role in southeastern Spain: the supply of water (collection, treatment, conveyance, and storage in reservoirs) to 80 municipalities in the provinces of the Region of Murcia (43), Alicante (35), and Albacete (2). It serves a population of 2.5 million people, which can exceed 3 million during the summer.
