The Regional Ministry of Women, Equality, LGBTI, Families and Social Policy presented the 2020 Murcia Region Volunteer Awards on Thursday. These awards recognize the charitable and altruistic work of organizations and individuals working to improve the lives of others. This year, the awards went to the UMU Volunteer Program, the Cieza Civil Protection Volunteer Group, and posthumously to María Requena.
Vice President and Councilor Isabel Franco presided over the ceremony, where she recognized the award-winning volunteers as "an example of effort, self-improvement, and generosity. These are essential tools for facing the difficulties that arise in everyday life, and even more so in times of COVID, when the needs of the most vulnerable have increased."
Franco also wanted to highlight "the regional government's commitment to volunteering, reflected in the joint work carried out by the Directorate General for the Third Sector and the organizations and associations that comprise it." This week, the proposed resolution of the applications submitted to the call for personal income tax grants was published, which includes the evaluation of the 454 projects requested by 132 organizations, "a clear example of the importance of volunteering and its fundamental role in achieving a more just and supportive society," he explained.
Likewise, this year's collective award recognized the Cieza City Council Volunteer Group for its contribution and actions aimed at addressing the difficulties and needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the municipality of Cieza. These range from supporting the elderly population who live alone and lack family support to carry out certain essential activities, to training and daily dissemination of health measures to adopt, and distributing masks.
The project award went to the University of Murcia's University Volunteer Program for its long and distinguished history of promoting university volunteering and developing projects to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, serving people in vulnerable situations.
