"As every year, Cieza will not miss this beautiful day for grandparents, celebrated on July 26th. This year, 2020, it falls next Sunday, making it a perfect day for families to gather and celebrate such a special day for our elders," says Cieza City Council.
The statement adds that, "Grandparents have always played a fundamental role in the family, as transmitters of values, experience, wisdom, and as pillars of unity for many families. Furthermore, the role of grandmothers and grandfathers in today's society is essential, as this group truly makes it possible for fathers and mothers in many families to balance work and family life, taking care of the younger generations."
“This year has been marked by the months of confinement we've suffered due to the COVID-19 crisis, which has meant that, for more than three months, most grandparents have had no face-to-face contact with their families. This has meant a great social loss for them and an emotional strain added to that brought with it by the uncertainty surrounding everything that has been happening with this pandemic.”
The Department for the Elderly states that "the lockdown has not only made it necessary to protect the elderly, a group at high risk of infection and with the highest mortality rate, but has also led to a series of social distancing measures that particularly affect the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, an essential figure who complements the children in the family and who receive so much affection and love from our elders."
"For all these reasons, this year, the Department for Senior Citizens would like to make a special appeal to families so that this Sunday is not just any Sunday, but rather the opposite: a day of joy and a demonstration of love and gratitude for the oldest members of the family, our grandparents."
