The Departments of Social Policy and Consumer Affairs are warning the public about scams being perpetrated in response to requests for aid following the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

These municipal departments offer information on valid channels for making financial donations through a link on cieza.es. They also clarify that, under no circumstances, should anyone send the materials some scammers are also requesting, as it is impossible for trucks to access the scene of the tragedy.

Municipal sources warn that hackers and scammers are taking advantage of the Earthquakes that have caused more than 21,000 deaths in Türkiye and Syria to impersonate NGOs, receive donations and steal data from Internet users.

In the campaign identified just after the earthquake, cybercriminals pretended to be representatives of a Ukrainian charity whose mission was to raise money to help victims.

From an IP address Bitdefender located in Pakistan, the scammers sent emails to their victims on behalf of the "Wladimir Foundation," which claimed to be assisting victims "on the ground."

Its website was created on October 3, 2022, and to receive donations, the fake NGO had also created cryptocurrency wallets.

The front for this fictitious organization initially served to solicit financial support for the victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, it appears to have changed its mission and is now seeking donations for the victims of the devastating earthquake.

Another campaign in which hackers pose as another global NGO that collaborates with UNICEF and asks users to send an email to an address to receive information about payment methods. With this interaction, users not only confirm their email address, but also risk providing additional personal and financial information, so it is recommended to always be vigilant to avoid falling for this type of fraud.

All this with the aim of avoiding possible frauds that some consumer associations have detected.

IMPORTANT: The Association of Consumers and Online Users (Consumur) has warned that several scams and frauds are occurring online through fake websites, posing as victims or representatives of humanitarian organizations, with the aim of receiving bank transfers or money orders and obtaining private data and passwords for cards or bank accounts.

For this reason, aid should not be sent through bank accounts listed in emails. Instead, it must be verified through the websites of recognized organizations that are actually raising funds.
