The mayor of Cieza, Tomás Rubio, appeared on Friday night to provide an initial assessment of the damage caused by the heavy hailstorm that afternoon, which left a total of 34.5 liters of water per square meter in one hour. In his words, "the damage caused was apparently not as much as we could have imagined."

The councilor, accompanied by a large representation of his governing team, reported that the rain had flooded areas of Avenida Juan XXIII and Camino del Molino, where residents requested the presence of firefighters to remove manhole covers.

Rubio explained that councilors from the various municipal areas have been personally supervising municipal facilities, and social workers have visited the most vulnerable areas, such as Cabezo de la Fuensantilla and Los Casones.

Regarding municipal facilities damaged by water, the Padre Salmerón Municipal Library presented the "most serious" situation with the flooding of the cloister. As a BIC building, it will require special attention and must be resolved as soon as possible. The mayor stated: "Emergency repairs will be carried out due to the lack of maintenance of this municipal facility."

Similarly, the downpours have caused problems at the Mariano Rojas Municipal Sports Center, the Siyasa Museum, and even Cieza City Hall itself. "We need to make a significant investment in municipal buildings," he said.

Areas affected by hail

Regarding the impact of hail on the municipality's agricultural areas, the mayor reported that trees in various agricultural areas have been affected. "We're talking about areas such as La Torre, El Ginete, El Maripinar, Los Albares, and large areas of the Serrana Mountains. The rainfall reached 30 liters per square meter in half an hour."

Finally, the mayor expressed his gratitude for the willingness to address the situation shown by municipal employees, councilors from the governing team and the rest of the Municipal Corporation, and even some regional government advisors.
