The councilor in charge of the Department of Public Works, Housing, and Infrastructure noted that, due to the rains that occurred on September 12 and 13, 2019, significant damage was caused to the road surface, rendering it impassable.

The road to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Buen Suceso is the The only road open to vehicle traffic that provides access to Atalaya Hill. It extends from the RM-532 highway, running along the mountain's southern face to the esplanade next to the sanctuary, from which there is also access to the uninhabited Islamic settlement of Medina Siyâsa.

Due to the rains that occurred on September 12 and 13, 2019, significant damage was caused to the roadway, making it impassable. due to the breakage of two retaining walls that caused uneven ground on the esplanade, leaving part of the pavement of the road overhanging, in addition to the debris and large stones that, displaced, were left deposited on the road.

The councillor responsible for the Department of Works, Housing and Infrastructure, Francisco Saorín, reports, through a press release, that the technical editor of the report considers that “There is a causal relationship between the catastrophic circumstance and the proposed repair or restitution, requiring immediate action to replace the infrastructure as this road is the only access for emergency forestry and firefighting services to the Atalaya hill and the north face of the Sierra del Oro.It is also the only road accessible for conservation and maintenance work on the abandoned Islamic settlement of Medina Siyâsa, listed as a Site of Cultural Interest with the category of Archaeological Zone. Furthermore, there is a risk that the damage will increase if another round of rain occurs, which would significantly increase the cost of reconstruction and the road closure time.

Saorín explains that The works are being carried out by the company JF Argudo and consist of the removal of debris and stones from the roadway and gutters, demolition and clean-up of the affected road surface and removal of debris to an authorized landfill, demolition of remains of collapsed wall and removal of debris to an authorized landfill, 10 m long transverse drainage work consisting of a 1,000 mm internal diameter reinforced concrete pipe, including 3 m long reinforced concrete downstream fins, variable height from 2 to 0.50 m and 0.25 cm thick and a 3 m long, 1.20 m wide and 50 cm deep footing, forming a 45º angle with the axis of the road, including a reinforced concrete frame around the mouth of the pipe to give continuity to the fins as a road surface containment system.

Furthermore, the intervention includes the excavation of a foundation trench and the formation of a base soil, the filling of granular material in undercuts, backing of walls and fins and the formation of slopes, cyclopean concrete in protective slabs at the entrances and exits of drainage works and a reinforced concrete wall 14 metres long, 4.50 metres high (including 50 cm of embedding) and 0.30 m thick with a footing 2.30 metres wide and 0.75 m deep, including cleaning concrete, clad with plastered stone and grouted with cement mortar.

In addition, protective parapets have been installed along the road, constructed from lightly reinforced precast concrete blocks clad with stone, and the road surface has been replaced with a 25 cm thick layer of soil cement and a 6 cm thick layer of asphalt agglomerate.

Finally, Saorín realizes that “The reconstruction of the La Atalaya road costs 87,035.03 euros., of which 71,929.78 euros correspond to the base price and 15,125.25 euros to VAT” and the execution period is two months.”
