Municipal sources from Cieza City Council have announced that this year they will not authorize the burning of San Antón bonfires in the city streets and surrounding areas. This practice is part of Cieza's tradition of celebrating the January 17th festivity with the lighting of bonfires in squares and intersections throughout the city.
The aforementioned sources explain that the decision is due to the high incidence of coronavirus infections affecting the municipality of Cieza these days, with the aim of avoiding large gatherings and crowds on public roads.
Thus, under no circumstances will the accumulation of the usual materials used for these types of bonfires or the lighting of these bonfires be permitted on public streets. Likewise, the traditional burning of "La Vieja del Rincón" (The Old Lady of the Corner) at the corner of the Convent is suspended.
Municipal security forces will monitor compliance with the City Council's decision throughout the night of January 17th, next Monday.
