Municipal government sources indicate that this Tuesday we witnessed "an unusual event," with a large streetlight breaking and then falling on Camino de Murcia. "Fortunately, there were no injuries, as the streetlight fell at a time when there was no pedestrian or vehicle traffic on the street. The fall did cause material damage, primarily to a vehicle."
The sources add that, "From the moment the incident was reported, City Hall service personnel and police went to the scene to remove the lamppost, inspect the damage, and organize traffic. A thorough examination of the remaining lampposts was immediately carried out, which led to the removal of another one, of the same type, model, and vintage. In light of the situation, municipal technicians have prepared the relevant report, which has found that this model of lamppost, installed 15 years ago, has significant deficiencies. This is a very tall lamppost with a curvature that puts great pressure on the base of the lamppost; as a result of the passage of time, the material of the base has deteriorated internally at a faster rate than that of other lampposts of other models, even those much older."
"Furthermore, it has been found that the material they are made of is not resistant to dog urine, which has gradually worn away the base of the lampposts."
The local government states that "it is clear and evident that 15 years is not a long time in the lifespan of a streetlight, since in our town we can see others that are even more than 50 years old and the material is still adequately resistant. Therefore, the Cieza City Council will proceed with the removal of all streetlights that do not meet high quality standards. For the municipal government, people's safety is paramount. Therefore, any doubt that a streetlight may have regarding a minimum guarantee will result in its removal, something that has already begun."
